The first thing we had to do, was learn how to work with the glass. Safety was important. We all had a sheet of thin glass each, a cutting blade and some gloves. Also, we had goggles, in case the glass splintered when we snapped or cut into it.
First, we oiled the blade so it moved freely over the glass. To start, we had to lightly drag the blade from one end of the glass to the other to get a line. Then we did the same again, only harder, to score into the glass. We had to make sure that we had scored right to both edges. Finally, turning the glass over, we pushed down on the scored line and the glass would break down the line.
It was quite hard at first, putting the pressure in the right place and scoring right to the edges. But after a while, we learnt how to split glass, and then we could move onto doing more shapes.
We also learnt how to cut circles out of glass. It was a similar principle, but we had a different tool. It was a suction-cup, with a ruler at one end which the blade was attached to. We could shift the blade up and down, to get different sized circles. It was the same technique as well, apart from getting the circle out.
We had to cut from the corner, to just close to the circle, for all four corners of the glass. Instead of pressing down on the cut like the first time, we had a special clamp to ease the process. Hopefully, the glass would split up the line and break away, leaving the round edge of the circle. If that didn't happen, the glass would just split all the way across and leave you with a semi-circle instead.
