Once we had learnt a few things about glass, we decided to go get some fabrics from Birmingham Rag Market. Along with some other things.
The first thing we sourced out, was a corset. Or something we could use to look like one. After wandering around the market, we found someone who sold them. Heather was first to jump onto the scene and start haggling for two corsets; white, slightly lacy, they were perfect for what we wanted them for.
Heather managed to secure the two corsets for a cheap price. After that, we continued to look around, and some of us bought our own things. The next big buy, was a collection of buttons which were painted to look like military buttons. We all collaborated on which ones we would like to use for our future pieces.
The rag market proved to be a good place to get some basic things for our pieces. But, we still needed some more fabrics. Before going to get some, we decided to take a look around the Birmingham museum, to get some inspiration. They were doing an exhibition on jewellery. They had some beautiful work, all brightly coloured and mixed with wire, fabric and paper too. It gave us some good ideas.
Then, we trawled through the rain to get something to eat. Of course, Heather chose to take us to Subway!
Once we had eaten our lunch, we went to get our fabrics. We went to Fancy Silk Store; it had four floors full of rolls of fabric. There, we got various colours of voile and some netting, and a bit of lace. Heather found a box of cheap scraps and dove in, finding various pieces of cheap material to take back with us.
And that was our trip to Birmingham.
